The story of Toboz

This is how Toboz was born

I’m from Budapest, but even though I love this vivid city, I appreciate it more and more if I can get out and get some fresh air in nature. Especially on the weekends!

Luckily my friends feel the same, therefore we quite often visit the beautiful countryside, and go for a hike in the forests. In the evenings when we are pleasantly tired, we just chat away drinking a good bottle of wine and we can forget about everything in our little bubble. Whether this happens in winter or summer is not even important.

What has always been a challenge is finding a comfortable accommodation for a bigger group with rooms for 2 or 3 people in it. Often the 10 of us were getting ready in one bathroom and the morning was gone by the time we were ready to leave. That’s how the idea of Toboz was born…

For a while, I was dreaming of an alternative life where I wasn’t working from 8-5 and the idea of creating an experience for likeminded people where they can get together and relax completely electrified me.

So I got into my car and drove around the little villages of Mátra – as somehow I knew it had to be in the Mátra mountain – until I accidentally came across the ‘For Sale’ sign hanging on Toboz!

This old little cube house was full of opportunities for me. An empty canvas that I could design as I wanted and would be comfortable for me and my friends. Together or in our rooms, in the rain or in good weather, using every minute well that we have. So now we have multiple rooms and bathrooms, big tables, BBQ on the patio. And the ideas have been nonstop ever since, and the furniture, decorations are continuously being added to Toboz. This project really became a part of me 🙂

And where did the name come from? One of my best friends who is a photographer surprised me with a couple of super photos because the walls were so empty. There were pinecones on it. She thought it would fit the guesthouse perfectly. And she was so right! We hung the pictures on the walls and all of a sudden the house had a name! Toboz – which means pinecone in Hungarian.

I look forward to seeing you! I hope you will feel as good as we feel with my friends on a weekend getaway at Toboz 🙂

Being surrounded by the Mátra, the fresh air, the sounds of the forest and the stream at the bottom of the garden is a treasure. Toboz is my safe haven.

The patio makes sure that weather winter or summer you can enjoy the nature that surrounds you. No direct rain or sun that stops you from sitting outside.

Guesthouse for 10 people - Mátra

Only an hour away from the noise of the city, the bustle of everyday life. Or even your own room in Toboz.

Toboz means all the above for me

About us

Experiencing Toboz

Once upon a time, beyond Mátra, beyond the old dame’s cottage, there was a pinetree. Every year hundreds of pinecones lay beneath it, rolling back and forth, searching their place.

One day, one of the pinecones nestled itself in the ground, and believe it or not, a house grew at its place. The house’s eyes looked back toward the mountain, it’s ears turned to hear the sound of the stream running through the garden. The house then turned to the forest with it’s quiet, peaceful patio.

The house had no resident when a black-eyed girl saw a miracle in it. She worked hard day and night diligently, enthusiastically, so that the joy of the house and the surroundings would not be just his.

There are difficulties even in the fairy tales, there were quite a few with Toboz too. But there are examples in the fairy tales and in life that the good gets its reward … the cottage got finished.

The fairy tale continues for us like this: The key traveled from hand to hand, its story spread by word of mouth, its door hasn’t even been closed ever since, as many guests turned up to experience Toboz, be it winter or summer.

We, as the first guests wish to Toboz and its black-eyed creator that this story never ends.
